At the heart of the Journey to the East design lies the classic Chinese literature, "Journey to the West". The design features abstract mosaic images of the four monks from the drama, masterfully integrated into the packaging of a traditional liquor bottle. This fusion of Chinese opera, classical literature, and traditional liquor represents a unique and fashionable interpretation of Chinese cultural elements.
What sets this design apart is its innovative approach to preserving and promoting traditional culture. By presenting cultural elements in a contemporary and appealing manner, the design not only makes traditional culture more accessible but also showcases the beauty of oriental culture to the international market.
The design employs black frosted glass bottles, with a simple and cost-effective production process involving roasted flowers and UV. The use of low-temperature paper further underscores the design's commitment to environmental sustainability. The final product measures 75mmx75mmx320mm, a testament to Zheng Bo's meticulous attention to detail.
Despite the challenges of redesigning traditional elements to align with modern times, Zheng Bo successfully overcame the hurdles. A crucial aspect was the careful selection of colors, particularly for the gold elements, which vary in shades. The use of photoshop and illustrator further enhanced the visual effects of the product, creating a memorable experience for consumers.
The Journey to the East project began in Shenzhen, China, in September 2016 and was completed in December of the same year. It is a collaborative effort by the Yanghe&OCD Project design five groups, with Zheng Bo leading the design process. The design's success is evident in its recognition at the A' Packaging Design Award in 2017, where it was awarded Silver for its remarkable creativity, technical expertise, and innovation.
In conclusion, Zheng Bo's Journey to the East is a testament to the power of design in bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. It not only redefines the image of traditional liquor but also presents a unique interpretation of oriental culture, making it more accessible and appealing to a global audience. This innovative design project serves as an inspiration for future endeavors aimed at preserving and promoting cultural heritage in a rapidly changing world.
